Press release

Sheriff Graff would like to thank the Genesee County Legislature and Governor Hochul for officially proclaiming this week as “Sheriffs’ Week.”

The third week of September every year is used as an occasion to celebrate the long and unique history of the Office of Sheriff in New York and to highlight the many vital services provided to the citizens year round by the Sheriffs’ Deputies, Correction Officers, Emergency Services Dispatchers, Dog Control Officers and civilian staff. The lights on the Old County Courthouse cupola will be changed to blue to acknowledge this week.

Having been established in the State’s first constitution in 1777, and having been continued in every succeeding constitution, the Office of Sheriff is one of the original constitutional offices of Genesee County first established in 1802. The Sheriff is the only law enforcement officer chosen directly by the People and accountable directly to the People. The Office of Sheriff is currently held by Joseph M. Graff, who was elected in 2025 and has 25 years of experience in local law enforcement in Genesee County.

While many of the functions, powers, and duties of the Sheriff have evolved over time, the core and historic nature of the Sheriff as the conservator of the peace in the county has remained constant. The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office has evolved into a modern, professionally accredited, full-service law enforcement and public safety agency. It is responsible for providing several crucial services which include maintaining the county jail; dispatching emergency services; providing security in our schools, communication systems, animal control, community service and victim assistance, and serving/executing civil process and victim protection orders for our courts.

As a constitutionally empowered Office directly responsible to the people, the ancient Office of Sheriff remains, even today, responsive and accountable to the public it serves.

In observance of this week, we would like to recognize the most-recent Deputy Sheriffs on our road patrol:
