Press release

Wyoming County, NY — Matthew Sage, a lifelong Wyoming County resident and 21-year veteran of the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office, has officially announced his candidacy for Wyoming County Sheriff.

Sage brings more than two decades of law enforcement experience and deep local roots to his campaign. Born and raised on a small family farm in the Town of Middlebury, he continues to operate a family maple syrup business with his brothers. He currently resides in the Village of Attica with his wife, Angela, and their three children.

“I’m running for Sheriff because I believe experience, integrity, and commitment to this community matter,” Sage said. “Wyoming County deserves a Sheriff who understands both the job and the people we serve.”

After earning an associate degree in Criminal Justice from Genesee Community College in 2001, Sage began his law enforcement career in 2004 as a part-time police officer with the Attica Police Department while attending the Rural Police Training Institute. Later that year, he joined the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office as a part-time Deputy Sheriff and was promoted to full-time Deputy in January 2005.

During his 21-year career, Sage has served in many capacities within the Sheriff’s Office, including road patrol on all shifts, courthouse security, civil office assistance, and serving as Officer in Charge countless times. He was also one of the first certified Drug Recognition Experts in the history of the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office.

Beyond law enforcement, Sage has a long record of community and public service. He has been a member of the Wyoming County Republican Committee and a director on the Wyoming County Fair Board for many years. Sage has also been a director for the New York State Maple Producers Association serving at the county, regional, and state levels. Since 2019, he has served as an elected Village Trustee in Attica and was appointed Deputy Mayor in 2025, gaining hands-on experience in budgeting, policy development, grant writing, personnel management, and contract negotiation.

A lifelong Republican, Sage emphasizes conservative values including personal responsibility, limited government, respect for the Constitution, and strong support for the Second Amendment.

“As Sheriff, I will stand with responsible gun owners, uphold constitutional rights, and hold criminals accountable,” Sage said. “Public safety and constitutional freedoms go hand in hand, and I will never compromise one for the other.”

Sage says his campaign is focused on leadership, professionalism, and ensuring the Sheriff’s Office continues to serve Wyoming County with transparency, accountability, and respect.

“I’m ready to serve as your Sheriff,” Sage added. “I respectfully ask for the support and trust of the people of Wyoming County.”
