This demonstration is part of the nationwide \u201cGood Trouble Lives On\u201d effort [<a href=\"https:\/\/na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.goodtroubleliveson.org%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7C%7C65ef72274d594bc7085508dee2607ed5%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C639197101462512999%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=H83zZMqMmqj0we3BnxUOtInUV7dWQ3RrzFtVAIa05Ms%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.goodtroubleliveson.org\/<\/a>] which demands democracy and opposes authoritarianism. The recent announcement of the detention center expansion is the most recent and blatant example of an anti-democratic decision, as it does not need approval from local people, nor even local planning and zoning boards, to increase the capacity of US Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) to carry out their authoritarian mission locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 12:00 to 2:00 PM, GLOW Community Alliance and Genesee County Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) will hold this demonstration outside Batavia City Hall [<a href=\"https:\/\/na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.co%2Fkgs%2FG5YyNiZ&amp;data=05%7C02%7C%7C65ef72274d594bc7085508dee2607ed5%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C639197101462544179%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=ixYWPQqtRi%2B%2FhQpH%2B6C8XrxeMKldue%2FRVT9qMzAL0H0%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/g.co\/kgs\/G5YyNiZ<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gina Schelemanow is chair of Genesee County DSA, which is co-organizing the demonstration. \u201cWe don\u2019t need an addition on the detention center in Batavia. Having a detention center in Batavia to begin with is not ideal,\u201d they said, \u201cWe are a community of neighbors and this extends to our immigrant neighbors. Spreading hate and disappearing members of our community is not welcome here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is expanding the Batavia Detention Center, building for 100 more beds. We oppose detention and deportation altogether,\u201d said Jane Schmieder, a local attorney who is co-organizing the rally with GLOW Community Alliance, \u201cBatavia will be known as the destination for mistreating and caging our Hispanic neighbors. That is not who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese sorts of authoritarian shock troops have no place in a decent society,\u201d said Logan W. Cole, secretary of Genesee County DSA. \u201cWe should be working towards a society without ICE rather than giving them more resources to detain folks who did nothing wrong \u2013 families that are trying to do the right thing, work, go to school, be productive contributors to society, are frightened. We all saw what happened by the Quality Inn,\u201d he said, referring to an incident that occurred in Batavia on July 10<sup>th<\/sup>, in which ICE agents in unmarked vehicles profiled, surrounded, and harassed a United States citizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood Trouble Lives On\u201d actions are happening across the country and what ICE is doing here in Batavia is the antithesis of good trouble.
