East Pembroke Fire Department water rescue team saves dog who fell through the ice on the creek

Colton Humel and his dog Mack, a one year old German Shepard, had just returned to the shop at Creekside Rentals on Indian Falls road just after 1:15 Friday afternoon.

“I walked him out to go to the bathroom, and I have these, (wet cloth gloves) and in holding his leash it was slippery,” says Humel.

Mack ran off during his bathroom break.

“He was just faster, I chased him around here then he got back into the woods and then to the creek.”

By the time Humel caught up with Mack he was out on the ice covered waters of the Tonawanda Creek.

“He just kept going, and then all of a sudden he fell in.”

Humel then called 9-1-1 for help.

Within minutes the East Pembroke Fire Department’s water rescue team responded.

“When we arrived on scene, the dog was in the middle of the creek and got caught standing on a rock out there,” says Don Newton, East Pembroke Fire Chief.

Newton says Mack was in about a foot and a half of water. The water was up to the mid side of his back.

“We got here with out utility truck and UTV and ice water rescue stuff and went out. A couple of us put on our water suits and went in to get the dog”

Newton says they had to go across the ice, get in the water then come back across.

“The dog was definitely cold, not sure if he was going to bite at all, but I think he was more happy when I grabbed him and then I was able to set him up on top of the ice so we could walk him off to the creek bank.”

“A happy ending,”says Newton.

The dog was transported to a local vet by private vehicle after being rescued.
