Darien/A number of animals perish in late night barn fire

A barn fire on Simonds road has destroyed a two story structure that housed several farm animals and family pets.

According to Darien Fire Chief Jeff Luker, flames could be seen at least a mile away.

Six companies, Darien, Alexander, Corfu, Pembroke, East Pembroke and Indian Falls responded to the scene at 9829 Simonds road.

Luker says fire crews could only fight the fire in a defensive mode because the structure was fully involved upon arrival.

No one was injured in the blaze, but an unknown amount of horses, cows and family pets did not make it out.

The residents were at home at the time of the fire and had checked on the barn earlier, but when the homeowner went out to check the barn before going to bed they discovered the fire which was already fully involved.

The barn also housed some recreational vehicles.

There were some heater sources inside the building, but Luker could not say if they caused the fire or not.
