BATAVIA/ Police investigating animal remains found in basement

The City of Batavia Police are investigating the discovery of animal remains in a former pet store at the corner of Ellicott and Liberty street.

An employee of I.D. Booth, who owns the building, discovered the animal remains in the basement while cleaning up the inside of the property which formerly housed a pet store for over 15 years.

The police were contacted yesterday afternoon and are currently investigating.

The incident was brought to light after pictures of the remains were posted on social media and discussed on a morning radio show on Thursday morning.

According to Det. Sgt. Todd Crossett, the remains were handed over to the SPCA and they will make a determination on what type of animal it is .

Crossett says a necropsy(a post mortem exam of a non human) will be performed and more will be known in a few weeks as to how the animal died.

“It’s hard to say what charges there could be if any because it is not known what the cause of death is at this point,” says Crossett
