Batavia High School students recognized at Kiwanis luncheon

Senior Serena Strollo-DiCenso received the Citizenship Award which is presented to a Senior student for outstanding and unselfish citizenship. Strollo-DiCenso was also presented with a check for $500.

Serena Strollo-DiCenso is the daughter of past Kiwanian and Kiwanian of the year Anita Strollo and Joseph DiCenso.

Strollo-DiCenso has logged hundreds of community service hours through out her time in high school. She is President of Batavia High’s Tri -M Music Honor Society and is Co-Treasurer and Historian for Production Club.

Strollo-DiCenso is a leading player in the theatre department at Batavia High School and has also been involved with theatre through the Batavia Players for the past ten years.

Because of her love for theatre, She will be attending the University at Buffalo to major in musical theatre and history. She then plans to attend law school where she will concentrate in entertainment and intellectual property law.

Celia Flynn was awarded the Outstanding Service in Choral award at Batavia High School.

Flynn is the daughter of Ed and Colleen Flynn and in the Fall will be attending the University at Buffalo with a double major in Communications and Media Studies and a minor in Film Studies to become a cinematographer or screen writer.

She is a member of the Batavia Players Board of Directors and is an Assistant Director for their Spring Youth Theatre Camp.

Flynn also plays trumpet in the Batavia High School Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band and Brass Band, she is also in Chorus.

She is President of the BHS Production Club and V.P. of the BHS Drama Club and has performed in the GWMEA All County Chorus all four years of high school and sang with the Area All-State Chorus this past fall. Flynn also had the privilege to sing at the RPO Holiday Gala.

Quentin Branciforte received the Outstanding Service in Band Award at Batavia High School.

Branciforte has been very involved in the school community. Branciforte is the drummer of Saxophone, Brass, Jazz,Flute and Percussion ensemble. He also plays drums in the Pit Orchestra for musicals at the high school. He also plays in the Pep Band at the Blue Devils football games.

Branciforte has participated in the GWMEA and NYSSMA solo festivals and was accepted into the All County Band the past two years.

He was also elected Co-Mayor representing the school body at many school functions. He also emcees school assemblies and reads the daily announcements at school.

Branciforte also participated in the 2017 Mr. Batavia Competition and earned third place and was able to donate $1,100 to Anna’s Wish Foundation, the charity he represented in the event.

Branciforte is looking forward to attending college and hopes to become an educator at his alma mater in the future.

Elizabeth Piedmont received the Outstanding Service in Orchestra Award at Batavia High School.

Piedmont is the daughter of Joseph Piedmont and Joanna Poole.

She is planning to go to college and study biology and biochemistry in the hopes of becoming a researcher or possibly a marine biologist. He goal is to get her PhD in that field.

Piedmont is very involve in the Music Department at Batavia High School.

She participated in Orchestra, String Sensations, Chorus, Pit Orchestra and as a Co-Historian in Tri-M.  Piedmont frequently volunteers at school and outside of school and also is very involved in her academics, taking college courses.

Outside of school, Piedmont teaches violin on the weekends.

Top Ten Batavia High School Seniors named at the Kiwanis Recognition Luncheon Thursday afternoon.

  1. Campbell Andersen is the son of David and Kristine Anderson. He is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and will be attending the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, majoring in Physics and to become an officer of the US Air Force. Andersen is in Tri-M Honor Society and sings with the high school barbershop. He is active in the community and is involved in Youth Court, the local Civil Air Patrol Squadron and runs cross country, indoor track and on the outdoor track team.
  2. Margaret Cecere is the daughter of Peter and Kathy Cecere. Cecere received both academic and athletic scholarships and will attend Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. She will be playing on the Division II varsity soccer team while majoring in biology with a specialization in pre-medicine with the hopes of moving on to medical school. She has participated in student government at BHS and has been a scholar athlete for both varsity soccer and indoor track for four years. Cecere is also part of the National Honor Society. Link Crew, Zonta Club and outdoor track team. She also is a volunteer in her community.
  3. Madison Grover is the daughter of Nicholas and Tracy Grover. She will be attending Brigham Young University where she plans to major in neuroscience.  Grover is very active in her church, participating in many service events and conducting music for the congregation. She plays violin in the school orchestra and is a member of Sting Sensatons, she has also been enrolled in many AP and college classes  throughout her high school career and is a member of the National Honor Society.
  4.   5. Madison Moore is the daughter of Robert and Susan Moore. Moore will be attending Ithaca College in the fall as a Park Scholar on a full scholarship. She will be majoring in Journalism at the Roy H. Park School of Communications. She is involved in Student Government at BHS, where she currently serves as the Board of Education Student Ex-Officio. She is also President of the National Honor Society and Z-Club. Moore also participates in Link Crew, Sources of Strength as well as HOBY and the Batavia Youth Board. She also co-hosted the Mr. Batavia pageant this year. Moore plays varsity soccer and runs indoor track and field winning two back to back individual sectional championships in the 1500m racewalk, She is also a volunteer in the community.
  6. Abigail Stendts is the daughter of Sandy and Brian Stendts. Stendts will be attending GCC in the fall for General Studies. She is the treasurer of the National Honor Society and a student representative for the class of 2017. She is also part of Link Crew, the BHS Orchestra and has danced at Center Stage for the past 12 years.
  7. Cheyenne Ernst is the daughter of John and Melody Ernst. Ernst has received the Trustees’ and Science Scholarships and will be attending St. John Fisher College, majoring in biology. She is President of the National Art Honor Society and also is a contributor and liaison to the Blue Cannon literary arts magazine. Ernst has participated in tennis, homecoming and numerous congressional and district art shows.
  8. Cassidy Miller is the daughter of Deanne and David Miller. Miller is the Executive Council Secretary, National Honor Society Vice President, member of the National Art Honor Society and a member of Link Crew. She is is enrolled in AP and college classes and outside of school is a member of the Genesee County Youth Court and dances at Suzanne’s School of Dance. Miller plans on attending GCC after receiving the Presidential Scholarship majoring in Biotechnology. After GCC, Miller will transfer to SUNY Fredonia and continue her studies in Molecular Biology to become a Genetic Counselor.
  9. Zachary O’Brien is the son of Gregory and Karen O’Brien. He will be attending RIT to study electrical engineering with a computer option. O’Brien has received the Chemistry Achievement Award for attaining one of the highest grades in Regents and in AP Chemistry. He also received the RIT Computing Medal Award. O’Brien is involved in the National Honor Society, Model UN, Link Crew and the Z-Club. Outside of school he is involved with Ducks Unlimited. He was on the Batavia Alpine Ski Team and a member of the Ski Club.
  10. McKenna Dziemian is the daughter of Jim and Connie Dziemian. She is planning on attending the University of Rochester to study Biomedical Engineering and Research. Dziemian also plays saxophone and participates in Band, Jazz Band and Saxophone Ensemble. She has also participated in the Roberts Wesleyan Honors Band, All County Band, All County Jazz Band and chorus. Dziemian also has participated in the Scholastic Bowl and the Nationals in Washington, DC.
