A Wood Duck and her ducklings were on their way to the Tonawanda Creek at West Main street and Dellinger avenue Thursday evening when four of her ducklings fell into a storm drain.
A little after 6:30p.m., City of Batavia Police responded to the storm drain on Dellinger avenue and called for the City Of Batavia Fire Department with their rescue net.
Once on scene, firefighters were able to corner the jumpy days old ducklings with their net. Several were too small to stay in the net and easily fell out. But eventually they were rescued and placed into a bucket.
After reuniting them with their mother and siblings, fire crews attempted to scoot the brood towards West Main street to cross over to the Tonawanda Creek. However, the duck and her ducklings were not cooperative.
After collecting the ducklings up into a bucket again, firefighters left them in the backyard of a residence in the hopes that the mother Wood Duck would return to lead them after flying away.
