GENESEE COUNTY/Batavia/Man found dead after fire in motel room caused by smoking in bed

UPDATE:

At 8:57a.m.Saturday, the Genesee County Emergency Dispatch Center received a report of a fire at the Sunset Motel, at 4054 West Main street road in the Town of Batavia.

Fire crews from the Town of Batavia Fire Department arrived on scene and were able to extinguish the fire quickly, keeping the fire contained to one room.

The occupant of the room, Lance Dery, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Dery was smoking in his bed, which ignited the blankets and mattress.

Coroner Karen Lang responded to the scene and Dery was taken to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing by the Town of Batavia Fire Department, Genesee county  Emergency Management Office and the Sheriff’s Office.

A person was found dead after a fire in a motel room at the Sunset Motel on West Main street road in the Town of Batavia.

Fire crews were called to room 15 about 9:00 a.m. for a working structure fire. When law enforcement arrived on scene they were unable to gain access to the room.

When the Town of Batavia Fire arrived on scene, smoke was coming from the buidling and the door was hot, according to Deputy Fire Chief Chad Higgins.

After crews gained access, they discovered a small fire in the corner of the room and quickly put the fire out with an extinguisher. One victim was also discovered and pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unknown how the fire started and if the victim died because of the fire or was already deceased at the time of the fire.

No other rooms were involved in the fire.

Fire investigators have been called in and the Genseee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death.
