GENESEE AND ORLEANS COUNTY/Art and film festival displays the talents of those with disabilities

The ARC of Genesee Orleans held their annual Art Show and Sprout Film Festival at the Stuart Steiner Theatre on Saturday afternoon.

There were 12 different artists with work on display and 3 “Meet the Artist” areas set up so the community and supporters could view their works before viewing 8 different film shorts that were created by people with disabilities.

The films star people with disabilities and are written and directed by people with disabilities.

“It’s an opportunity for us to show all the unique talents and expertise we have in different areas,” says Shelley Falitico, Director of Development/Community Relations at ARC of Genesee/Orleans.

This year for the first time, 3 and 4 year old’s from Rainbow Pre-School/ABCD Child care had an art display.

“When we merged last year, part of the merger was with Rainbow Pre-School which has locations in Albion, Holley and Batavia. The students took a famous artist and they learned about the shapes, contrasts and the colors and the teacher had them match that artist, the students then created their own based on what they learned ”

Falitico says the show is very motivational each year. March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness month.

“When the show concludes, they ask me when the next show is because they love to have the opportunity to display their art work and they plan ahead. We have also had their work on display at galleries in Buffalo.”

The programs is made possible with funds from the NYS Council on the Arts, which is administered by Go Art.

This year ARC of Genesee/Orleans received a $2,500 grant.
