On April 18, 2018 at 5:02p.m, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area of 58 West Main street in the Village of Corfu for a three vehicle accident with a report of a serious physical injury. Four people were transported to ECMC in the accident.
On April 20, 2018, following an investigation into the accident, Jacob J. Szumigala, 24, of Orchard Park Rd., Oakfield, was charged with DWI, vehicular assault 2nd/causing serious physical injury, aggravated unlicensed operation 1st, reckless driving, speed not reasonable and prudent, failure to keep right, following too closely, unsafe passing on the left, consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle, operating/violation of restrictions, violation of restricted use license, throwing/deposited refuse on highway and driver’s view obstructed.
Szumigala was arraigned in the Village of Corfu Court and was jailed in $10,000 cash bail. He will re-appear in Village of Corfu Court on May 14, 2018 at 1:00p.m.

According to Undersheriff Greg Walker, a Hyundai Sonata was headed west on Rt. 33 traveling at high rate of speed when it rear ended a gray Honda Civic that was also headed westbound on Rt. 33.
The Hyundai Sonata then pushed the Honda Civic into a eastbound pick up truck. The driver of the gray Honda Civic, James M. Hoskins, of Corfu, suffered serious injuries and Crash Management was called to the scene to investigate the accident and the road was shut down for about 4 hours.
A driver and passenger in the pick up truck, Gerald D. Sanders and Lynn Sanders of Batavia, were transported to ECMC as a precaution. The male driver of the Hyundai Sonata, Jacob J. Szumigala, 24, of Oakfield, did not suffer any life threatening injuries.
