GENESEE COUNTY/DARIEN LAKE OFFICALLY OPENS NEWEST ROLLER COASTER, TANTRUM

Press release

DARIEN CENTER, N.Y., June 1, 2018– Darien Lake officially opened its newest roller coaster today, Tantrum.

The nearly $5 million addition will be Darien Lake’s seventh coaster that will take riders on a signature beyond-vertical drop that hasn’t previously been offered to park guests.

At the ribbon cutting, staff and park guests were joined by Genesee County elected officials, development partners from the Genesee County Economic Development Center and Genesee Chamber of Commerce as well as sponsors including Perry’s Ice Cream giving away samples of its newest ice cream flavor “Tantrum Twist.”

Tantrum, the first coaster of its kind in New York State and Ontario, Canada, embarks riders on a 98-foot vertical lift at a 90-degree angle – straight up the coaster’s first hill. In a matter of seconds, upon reaching its apex, the train plummets into a 97-degree drop and pretzel inversion. Reaching speeds of 52 mph, the coaster snakes through the structure over a bunny hop, keeps riders wondering which way is up or down during an Immelmann turn, and finishes with a tilted loop.

“We are elated to bring the newest thrill ride, Tantrum, to our great park,” said Darien Lake General Manager Chris Thorpe. “With so many unique features, the coaster will be a must ride for the summer plus with an extended season, guests will get to ride Tantrum, plus our six other coasters and our other rides into the Fall as well.”
