GENESEE COUNTY/History lost in Elba fire on Sunday morning

It started as a stage coach stop sometime in the 1800’s, it has served as a dance hall and a party stop for many over the years.

According to the Historical Society of Elba, the building was constructed in 1874 after a fire destroyed the original structure

On Sunday morning, a woman walked into the Elba Diner looking for a bucket of water to help put out a small fire on the floor at the front entrance to the Stumblin’ Inn at 1 S. Main street.

After the dish washer walked up to the entryway, the window had blown out according to Doug Chappius, owner of the Elba Diner.

That is when fire companies from Genesee and Orleans County were dispatched to help the Elba Fire Department put out the runaway fire.

Heale says when he arrived on scene flames were coming from the front first floor windows.

Crews used hydrants that were just recently installed on S. Main street and tankers were requested for more water.

Heale says it was a defensive attack.

The roof eventually caved in and excavation equipment was requested. The building will be taken down as it is a hazard.

Brockport Fire was also requested to the scene as was Wyoming Correctional.

The owners of the Stumblin’ Inn, Stephen and Jim Goff, were not injured in the blaze and were able to get out before firefighters arrived on scene.

They will be staying with friends.

Elba Fire will remain on scene for most of the day and will be investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
