WYOMING COUNTY/Castile family living on the edge after catch basin collapse causes sinkholes

Jan and Paul Myers and their 4 year old daughter Jesslyn along with the family dog Sabre, are feeling a little uneasy when they step outside in their driveway or go to the garage these days.

Last evening, Paul arrived home from work and parked in his driveway at 23 S. Main street in the Village of Castile and the front tire of his pick up truck became stuck in a hole.

The deep hole in the driveway lines up with the 10 foot deep sinkhole that appeared behind their garage in April.

After last evening’s new sink hole discovery, the Village of Castile has decided to make the driveway off limits and close the sidewalk in the area of the Myers’ garage. The two sink hole areas have been fenced off and covered with plywood for safety.

The couple are now parking their vehicles in a neighbor’s yard.

In April, Paul says he reported the first sink hole to the Village Mayor Keith Washburn, but had not heard back from him.

Today, they received a letter from the Acting Mayor Dennis Miller who informed them there was a catch basin collapse and that the State initially claimed responsibility for the occurrence, but have since rescinded and transferred all liability and workload to the Village of Castile.

According to Miller, the Village of Castile does not have any easement to the property permitting them to do work there, but they are working to obtain an easement.

Miller also says the Village has contacted Senator Gallivan’s Office to obtain assistance in correcting this project which has been unforeseen and acquired by the Village of Castile.

In the meantime, the Myers family is nervous when stepping outside their house. Especially during heavy rains.

“Nobody has any idea, when you see on the news the sink holes with the cars falling in, I would hate to see that happen here when we tried to get help back in April, says Jan Myers.
