Two fishermen in their 60’s were recovered from the waters of Lake Ontario late this morning after their boat capsized after taking on water in 5-7 ft. waves about 9 miles from shore near Point Breeze.
According to the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office, one man was found deceased and the other was found alive.
It is believed they were in the water 2-3 hours before they were recovered.
Both men were wearing a floatation device and in the high waves became separated.
According to Sgt. John Doyle, a Welland Canadian freighter came upon them after one man got their attention. Two fisherman from Ohio then recovered the man who was alive. The freighter then dispatched a smaller boat off the freighter to recover the man who was deceased.
The US and Canadian Coast Guard then responded. The Coast Guard choppers then transported the victims back to shore at Point Breeze.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, one man is local and the other is from out west.
