LEROY/Cub Scouts learn about local and state governments

Cub Scout Pack 6023 in LeRoy held a mock vote on a proposed dog park in the Village of LeRoy at their Wednesday night pack meeting.

Mayor Greg Rogers of LeRoy and Assemblyman Steve Hawley explained how local and state governments work during the mock Town Hall meeting that had 15 Cub Scouts, ages 6-11, thinking about issues in their local community. After hearing about how a bill becomes a law at the state level from Assemblyman Hawley and how Byron Bergen students helped make Greek yogurt the official NYS snack in 2014, the scouts had their thinking caps on.

Four trustees and a mayor were selected from the pack, they mulled over such topics as building a statue of the mayor, building a new church, making ice cream sundaes their official food and making a dog park in the village.

The group decided that a resolution to create a dog park needed to be discussed and voted on .

After listening to many of the public’s concerns, like the park might stink from dog poop, cutting away trees so dogs don’t get hurt, that some people might be afraid of dogs and what if we spend a lot of money on it and not a lot of people have dogs.

One idea was to then give everyone a dog if they did not have one.

Mayor Rogers advised the group that their next step was to then vote on the resolution and that in the village of LeRoy there are only two dogs allowed per household, after that they must become a licensed kennel.

The Cub Scout crowd also discussed the possibility of an indoor dog park that could run on solar panels. The group thought that Mill street Park was a good location for the dog park since no one uses it very much.

After much discussion on the topic, and few other ones, the motion was carried and passed unanimously 5-0 to build a dog park in the village.
