BATAVIA/Alert neighbor calls 911 after seeing smoke and hearing alarms in Maple street fire

Thanks to an alert neighbor, the apartment house at 10 Maple street did not suffer severe damage in a working structure fire.

A neighbor noticed smoke coming out of the second story windows and heard alarms going off and called 911.

Melody Jones was just returning from her Christmas dinner when she noticed fire trucks on the street. Her son Matthew was asleep inside the their first floor apartment at 10 Maple street.

“I busted the windows screaming for him to wake up and get the hell outside,” says Jones.

“I didn’t hear any alarms, I just heard the sound of banging and breaking glass,” says Matthew.

“I looked and I seen my mom trying to get my attention telling me the house was on fire.”

The small fire started in the kitchen area of the second story apartment, according to Captain Marty Hinz with the City of Batavia Fire Department.

No one was home in the second story apartment at the time of the fire. A Pitbull named Sadie was located inside the apartment and was found shivering against a wall. Sadie was brought out to the Mercy EMS crew on scene who provided some oxygen and Sadie appeared to be okay and went with the City of Batavia Police Department in a vehicle to keep warm until the owner was located.

An unattended space heater may be the cause of the fire.

No one was injured in the blaze.
