ORLEANS COUNTY/Albion/Two people suffer burns in explosion

Two elderly residents suffered burns after an explosion at their residence at 5 Elmwood Avenue in the Village of Albion on Wednesday night.

Fire crews were dispatched for a possible house fire at 6:21p.m. and then a second call to dispatchers reported an explosion with a person’s clothes on fire.

According to Nathaniel Staines, PIO with the Albion Police Department, when police arrived on scene they located two elderly people, one male and one female, in the front yard suffering from burns.

Mercy Flight transported one victim to Strong Hospital in Rochester and COVA ambulance transported the other victim, also to Strong Hospital.

Their condition was not released.

According to a neighbor on the street, the next door neighbor assisted the male victim whose clothing was reportedly on fire.

The fire immediately went to a second alarm as flames were coming out of the rear of the structure. Items from the house were spread across part of the backyard.

The Red Cross has been contacted for the residents and investigators will be on scene through the night looking into the cause of the explosion.

The Albion Police, Orleans County Emergency Management and the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control are investigating.
