Congressman Chris Collins, who was a special guest at the Byron Fire Department Installation and Awards Banquet, kicked off the 46th annual event at the Byron Fire Hall on Saturday night.
The Department, in it’s 99th year, installed officers and honored several fire department members, Ladies Auxiliary members along with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office. They also made a $600 donation to the Genesee County K-9 fund in memory of Destro.
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Department received a Special Recognition Award for their dedicated service to Genesee County.
“This year we took a vote, we usually do Firefighter of the Year, but because we consider everybody a firefighter of the year for all their outstanding efforts and time they put in, we voted on there are so many other agencies that are a part of fire departments,” says Byron Fire Chief Robert Mruzcek.
“This year we decided to recognize the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department who are always there when we need them on our calls. They never hesitate to show up on calls as we do.”
The Byron Fire Department responded to 231 calls for service for 2018.

The Ladies Auxiliary also announced their Member of the Year, Elaine Barniak who has served in the Auxiliary for 50 years.
