A storage building engulfed in flames at 4608 School road, Gainesville, was reported at 12:44a.m. Saturday morning.
The 110’x56′ storage building contained agricultural seed and plant nutrients that are sold to the local farming community. Upon arrival, multiple explosions occurred , sending projectiles through the air endangering firefighters on scene.
Due to the on scene dangers, along with the nature of the contents in the building, firefighters let the building burn and instead protected all other exposures. They decided not to apply any water on the fire and they evacuated one nearby home as a precaution.
Contractors were then called to the scene to begin the clean up process, while firefighters applied foam to any remaining hotspots in the storage building.
The building is a total loss. Estimated loss is $1,250,000 and the blaze is under investigation.
Fire crews from Gainesville, Bliss, Castile, Pike, Silver Springs and Alexander were on scene for about 17 hours along with Wyoming County Emergency Services, Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department, Wyoming County Health Department, NYS DEC and NYSEG.
There were no injuries reported.
