BATAVIA/Man dies after being rescued from early morning fire

UPDATE-Press release: The City of Batavia Fire Department has secured contact with the immediate family of the fire victim from the earlier house fire at 109 Evans Street. As a result and keeping with the Fire Department’s Policy on the release of information, the name of the victim is Mr. John Sherman Sr.

At this time the City of Batavia’s Fire Investigation team along with investigators from the City of Batavia Police Department and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control continue to investigate the origin and cause of today’s fire. At this time no cause has been determined.

PRESS RELEASE: City of Batavia Fire Department

At approximately 7:06 am on March 30, 2019 the City of Batavia Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 109 Evans Street. First arriving fire units responded and were on-scene in under two (2) minutes from time of dispatch.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions and a reported person entrapped on the second floor of the home. Firefighters were met with untenable conditions but were able to make entry on the first floor. Crews were able to begin extinguishment and search and rescue operations.

As firefighters continued to aggressively search, the victim was located on the second floor and was removed from the house via ground ladder. The victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Additionally, there were two (2) dogs that were rescued by firefighters along with two (2) cats and one
chicken that were able to escape on their accord. Unfortunately one additional dog perished in the fire.

At this time the City of Batavia’s Fire Investigation team along with investigators from the City of Batavia Police Department and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control are investigating.

City Fire was assisted at the scene by the City of Batavia Police, Code Enforcement and Public Works Departments. Additional support provided by the Town of Batavia, Alexander, Darien Fire Departments and Mercy EMS along with Salvation Army.

A man has died after City of Batavia firefighters rescued him from a second story window at 109 Evans street during a early morning house fire that was reported a little after 7:00a.m.

According to Capt. Robert Fix, the fire was so intense, fire crews could not get to the victim in their first attempt to rescue him. After putting some water on the blaze they were able to locate the male victim in a front second story bedroom.

EMS crews performed CPR on the victim and he was transported to UMMC by ambulance, where he later died. According to City Fire, there were 7-8 people inside the single family home at the time of the fire. All but one made it out of the burning home.

Two dogs and a cat also were able to make it out. One dog received oxygen from EMS crews on location. The fire is believed to have started on the first floor. The Office of Fire Prevention and Control has been called in to help assist investigators in looking for the cause of the fire.

The Salvation Army has been called in to assist the other residents of the home.
