GENESEE COUNTY/Deputy Richardson retires after 27 years at Sheriff’s Department

Deputy Dana Richardson was presented with his retirement credentials at a presentation at the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office on Friday afternoon.

Richardson says the time was right.

He says he has enjoyed serving for 27 years. “It has been an enjoyable career, its always different, changing everyday.”

Richardson, 50, says his dad Roger played a big role in his decision to get into law enforcement.

“We hold ourselves to a higher standard, were supposed to be people of integrity and that involves when you are not in the public eye as well as when you are”

“I learned a lot of that from my father who served with the City of Batavia Police Department for 26 years. It’s about doing what is right, even when no one is looking, it’s about holding yourself to a higher standard. That’s what I’ve tried to do, I’m not perfect, but I enjoyed serving the area that my family has grown up and gone to school in.”

Richardson and his wife Debbie reside in Alexander and plan to remain in the area. Debbie loves children and has been involved in childcare for 30 years. They have been married 30 years and have three sons, Nicholas, Jacob and Andrew and one daughter Holly. They are expecting their first grandchild in May.

Richardson’s son Nicholas will carry on the law enforcement tradition in the family as he is serving with the Albemarle County Police Department in Charlottesville, Virginia. Jacob is working as a loss prevention supervisor at Darien Lake, Andrew is a youth pastor at Assembly of God Church and Holly works as a bank teller at ESL.

Deputy Dana Richardson started his career with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office on March 9, 1992, as a Correction Officer at the Genesee County Jail. Later that year, he was appointed Deputy Sheriff and joined Road Patrol.

During his tenure, Deputy Richardson earned two Commendations, a Meritorious Service Award and was the recipient of the Kiwanis Criminal Justice Award in 2003.

For the past three years, Deputy Richardson was assigned to Court Security at the Genesee County Courthouse where he protected court employees and Judges on a daily basis.

“Deputy Richardson has always been a very dedicated, professional officer,” stated Sheriff Sheron. “Everyone here at the Sheriff’s Office will truly miss Dana and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Richardson says he is exploring some different law enforcement career options as a part time position after retirement.
