A quick thinking bus driver was able to evacuate 17 children, ages elementary to high school, from a Student Transportation of America bus on Maxon road near Rt. 20A a little before 8:00a.m. on Tuesday morning.
According to State Police, the driver noticed an electrical burning smell while she was driving. At her next stop, she noticed there was light smoke coming from the engine area. The driver then evacuated the 17 students from the bus. Upon a second check of the bus, she noticed flames coming from the engine area.
State Police say within a few minutes the bus went up in flames.
Fire crews from Varysburg and Sheldon responded to the scene and were able to get the fire under control as it was reportedly engulfed upon arrival.
State Police say another STA bus on a run in the area then responded. The bus had room for some of the stranded kids and they were transported to school.
The remaining students were transported to the Varysburg Fire Department using the department ambulance. They were picked up by another STA bus and transported to school from there.
No one was injured.
All of the students involved are part of the Attica Central School District.
