BATAVIA/Full cost of an unanticipated expense for bridge over the Tonawanda Creek avoided

The Batavia Town Board voted 4-0 to pay an additional $37,626 to Keeler Construction for unanticipated work that came up during the construction of the pedestrian/bike bridge over the Tonawanda Creek which is part of the Ellicott Trail Project.

The resolution states that during construction the bridge required driving steel piles for the bridge abutment. It then became apparent that driving the piles would have required temporary relocation of the overhead electric lines at an estimated cost of about $90,000 according to National Grid.

To avoid this cost, the design and construction team at Keeler construction revised the design to allow the use of drilled king piles to support the bridge at a net cost of $37,626.85.

After being reviewed by the Town Engineer and Assistant Town Engineer, a change order was awarded and Keeler Construction’s contract went from $1,019,110 to $1,056.736.85 for the project.

The Ellicott Trail is expected to open by the end of October.
