BATAVIA/Blue Devils handle the Bulldogs in their first home opener at the new Van Detta stadium

The ribbon has been officially cut at the new Woodward Field at Van Detta Stadium.

About 20 members of the Van Detta family were on hand to celebrate the official opening of the new Van Detta Stadium which holds up to 2500 fans.

The Batavia Blue Devil’s Varsity Football team did not disappoint at the first Friday night lights held at the new field.

After getting the hang of the new venue and new turf in the first quarter, the Blue Devils put up two touchdowns in the second quarter, with Terez Smith cutting through the Bulldog defense on a 27 yard run to make it 6-0, with the extra point being good.

Later in the second quarter, Cody Burns was able to recover a fumble near midfield. The Blue Devils capitalized with a Alex Rood tucking the ball for a quarterback keeper into the end zone making the score 13-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Livonia was able to string several good runs together and after a good run by Marcus Lewis, the Bulldogs were almost to the goal line. On the next play of the drive Lewis was able to push his way through the Blue Devil defense to make the score 13-6. The 2 point conversion was good with a pass to Alexander Minnehan to make the score at the end of the 3rd quarter 13-8.

In the fourth quarter, Batavia was able to run the clock and move the ball half way down the field, where Cody Burns came from behind the line to a full out sprint down the field for a 57 yard touchdown to make it 19-8 with three minutes remaining in the game.

The Blue Devils were able to hang on and stop the Bulldog offense and are now 2-0. Batavia will travel to Honeoye Falls-Lima next Friday while Livonia(1-1) will travel to Hornell to play.
