BATAVIA/City Council looking into a multi-sport complex, upgrading the ice rink, tractor trailer traffic, housing issues, appointed a part time City Court Judge

In a long City Council Conference and Business meeting combined, City Council listened to and discussed many issues on Monday night.

During Public Comments, residents from the Oak street/Richmond avenue area asked council to do something about the increased tractor trailer traffic on Oak street/Rt. 98.

Another resident spoke of a housing issue in the City and the difficulty for younger residents as they attempt to purchase homes in the City. Also, a discussion on the amount of rental properties vs. actual homeowners and the need for a group to assist landlords and tenants.

Convention Sports and Leisure Company, an advisory and planning firm specializing in providing consulting services to the convention, sport, entertainment and visitor industries, presented a feasibility study on creating an indoor multi-sport complex attached to the ice rink on Evans street, which also is in need of updates since its construction in 1978.

Two options were presented, each have close to a 30 million dollar price tag. To update the current ice rink, a price tag of 4-5 million dollars was the estimated cost.

Long time Attorney David Saleh was voted in as part time City Court Judge and will begin his six year term on January 1st, 2020. Saleh will fill the part time job left vacant by Judge Durin Rogers, who was voted in as full time City Court Judge. Full time City Court Judge Balbick will retire at the end of the month after almost 30 years at the bench.

Council also honored first responders who were involved in the Liberty street stand-off in November. They were honored with a proclamation.
