LeRoy Fire District Commissioners awarded the “Medal of Valor” to 1st Asst. Chief Craig Johnson after he rescued a woman from a fire in her home on Bernd road on May 1, 2019 at 5:58a.m.
Commissioner Jerry Diskin commended Johnson for his decisive action upon arrival on scene. Pulling the victim to safety not once, but twice as she attempted to re-enter the home. The victim suffered extensive burns to her body.
“That morning was definitely an eye opener, that woke me up out of bed that morning,” says 1st Asst. Chief Johnson.
“What she went through was unbearable, but she is still with us today. I think she is very thankful for what we did and what we are trained to do, I hope that anyone of you could do this also.”
The LeRoy Fire Department responded to 289 calls in 2019, with February being their busiest month. Busiest day was Friday and most calls were between 7-8a.m.
The department responded to the NYS Thruway 20 times, Rt. 490 10 times, went to 58 motor vehicle accidents, 28 gas leaks, 17 medical assist calls and 40 mutual aid calls.
Capt. Jared Chick was named “Firefighter of the Year” for 2019.
“He did all of our fire reports for most of the year, a lot of behind the scenes stuff which a lot of people don’t see, and that is huge for us,” says Chief Tom Wood.
