Crossett, 48, who grew up on Prospect avenue in Batavia, says he loves to help people. His goal was to always make sure no one got hurt and that people were safe.

“Really the ones that stand out are the times I have been able to help people. I was a crisis negotiator for the department and those opportunities to be able to talk someone out, that came out not hurt, no one on our side was hurt, those are the things that I like,” said Crossett.

Assisting in finding an elderly woman with dementia in the middle of a cold winter night also was something that stood out after 22 years in law enforcement.

“We found her next to the old gas station on Pearl street, she was running low on gas and had parked there after a missing person was reported out of Buffalo. We were able to bring her here and keep her warm and safe.”

Crossett says he will continue on helping people in his new role as a VA Police Officer.

“It was a great opportunity at the VA, I love this department, but I could not pass up the benefits. I will continue to be involved in the community as I always have been, I am still here and you will still see me.”

Police Chief Shawn Heubusch says Crossett is a very caring person and that is what he tried to pass on as a role model at the department.

“He is an asset in the department and cares for the community and everybody in the department. Losing that 20 something years of experience will be tough to fill, but we have to fill it, time marches on,” says Heubusch.

Heubusch says he relied on Crossett a lot and he was a stable member of the Batavia Police Department for many years.

“We certainly appreciate the sacrifices not just that he has made, but his family as well during his time here.”

Christopher Camp is the new Assistant Police Chief as of a few days ago.

“Chris comes from a more tactical background and looks at police work through a different lens, no cop is the same. We do what is right for the community every single time, whatever job we are on, we will make sure its the best outcome for the community as a whole,” says Heubusch.
