A Message from Wyoming County Mental Health: Stressful situations often cause kids to worry, even if they don’t show it. They will have questions about changes taking place in their world. A confident and calm approach will help ease kids’ worries and make them feel secure.

Some recommendations for families with children during the COVID-19 restrictions: 

Keep activities as consistent and routine as possible at home. 

Ask your children what they have heard about COVID-19, and allow them to express feelings or concerns. Let them know it is okay to be afraid or mad, and help them deal with those feelings. Be willing to answer questions, age appropriately, about things they see on television or hear about COVID-19.

When children are uncertain or afraid, they need attention and affection more than ever. Make sure they feel safe and loved.  Encourage healthy behaviors such as eating and sleeping well and playing outside.  Reinforce good practices like washing hands, covering mouths when coughing or sneezing, and not sharing food.

Children react, in part, on what they see from the adults around them. When parents and caregivers deal with adversity calmly and confidently, they can provide the best support for their children.
