Wyoming County Community Services Director, Kelly Dryja, would like to remind Wyoming County residents as the community reopens, we will experience a mixture of emotions.

Relief will be accompanied by anxiety, fear, sadness, anger, and feeling overwhelmed. This is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation.
Just because things are re-opening does not mean the virus has gone away. There is uncertainty in the world, new demands will emerge in this “new normal” and we have to take steps to continue to address our mental
health.

Try to stay in the present moment. It is normal to try to problem solve but due to the uncertainty around us, we need more information for future events to effectively problem solve. If you find yourself a hundred steps
ahead, come back to the present moment and just solve the next step. It can become overwhelming and cause more anxiety to constantly be thinking so far into the future.

Another way to come back to the present moment is to notice your five senses: identify 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste.

We need to reflect on what matters most – our values can help us make decisions and guide our behavior.

Compassion and respect for others is needed as their needs and values may differ from ours. As someone put it, “We’re all in the same storm but we’re in much different boats.”

Everyone will have a different level of risk tolerance for what they can resume as things open up and may have experienced different hardships from our own. Try to focus on the good and commonalities among us to help be graceful towards co-workers, neighbors, family, and friends.
