Sheriff Gregory Rudolph reports, “The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office and Village of Attica Police Department have been receiving fraud complaints involving a payroll scam in both the public and private sectors.
The perpetrator(s) of these crimes is reaching out to the human resource departments or payroll clerks of the respective sector through bogus email accounts utilizing an employee’s name and then requesting a change to the payroll direct deposit to a different bank and account that the perpetrator has access to.
It is recommended that businesses be aware of this scam, and be cautious of changing direct deposits without verifying the change with the employee through a secure means.
