No one was injured after a Waste Management garbage truck struck the railroad bridge on Mill street in LeRoy on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Sgt. Emily McNamara with the LeRoy Police Department, the truck was headed north on Mill street when it caught a power line and then lost 4 natural gas tanks after not making it under the railroad bridge. The bridge height is 12’6″. Police say the truck with the tanks on top measure 13’6″.
According to LeRoy Fire Chief Thomas Wood, one tank exploded and three others bled out. The driver was not injured.
Robert Irving II was working in a shop about 100 yards to the north of the accident, he says he was forced onto his tool box by the explosion. The explosion was heard over a wide radius throughout the village and neighboring towns. Part of the bridge was also damaged in the blast.
The Rochester Southern railroad will determine whether the train track above the bridge is safe. The railroad personnel on scene are waiting for their supervisor to arrive from Massachusetts. Train traffic has been suspended for now.
