Press release
The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office will be joining forces with NYS Department of Transportation for OPERATION HARD HAT.
OPERATION HARD HAT highlights the importance of safe driving practices in active construction and maintenance work zones across the state.
Members of the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies within Wyoming County will patrol active work zones the week of August 17th-21st, 2020 at various locations around Wyoming County where State Department of Transportation employees will be performing maintenance and construction activities
Deputies will be present within the work zones, dressed as highway maintenance workers, to ticket motorists who disobey flagging personnel, speed through the work zone or violate the state’s Move Over Law, which applies to emergency and work vehicles. NYS DOT recently launched a public service announcement (https://www.thruway.ny.gov/travelers/safety/moveoverlaw.html) highlighting the importance of moving over in construction work zones across the state.
New York’s Move Over Law requires motorists to carefully slow down and safely move over when approaching law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks and construction and maintenance vehicles stopped along the roads.
Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone, and in accordance with the Work Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
