BATAVIA/Family homeless after late morning fire on Maple street

The City of Batavia Fire Department responded to 37 Maple street late Tuesday morning, for a reported house fire. When fire crews rounded the corner of Maple street at Jackson, they called for a second alarm response as heavy smoke filled the end of the street near Evans street.

“The fire looks like it started in the back. The fire worked its way up the siding, breached the first story window, which then lapped up into the second story and the attic,” says Chief Stefan Napolitano.

The Red Cross is assisting a family of four adults and two children. The home suffered heavy fire, smoke and water damage. According to City of Batavia Fire Chief Stefan Napolitano, all the residents were able to escape the fire safely, however two dogs and two cats perished in the blaze.

The fire is believed to have started in the rear of the house. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.
