WYOMING COUNTY/Chamber & Tourism celebrates National June is Dairy Month with an art inspired contest

Press release

This year to celebrate  National “June is Dairy Month,” the Wyoming County Chamber and Tourism office is holding a creatively crafted contest with the Arts Council for Wyoming County and Clickety Sticks in Arcade. They have knitted several stuffed cows, and the Chamber & Tourism office is giving the public a chance to win one each week during the month of June.

“It’s often said that there are more cows in Wyoming County than people – but it’s true – there are 47,200 cows and 39,860 people in Wyoming County,” said Eric Szucs, Director of Tourism for Wyoming County, “So what better time to appreciate our innovative, creative and hardworking dairy culture, than to celebrate National Dairy Month in June!”

Entering to win one of the knit cows is easy, simply do these three things:

1. Share a picture of yourself on Facebook enjoying dairy in Wyoming County. Share a picture enjoying a cold glass of milk, eating an ice cream come, sampling your favorite cheese – OR – visit one of our many shops, restaurants, farmers’ markets or roadside produce stands.

2. Follow WyCo Tourism & the Arts Council for Wyoming County on Facebook for updates & activities

3. Use the tag #WyCoApproved so we can see your entries

The handcrafted knit cows were created by Linda Franke at the Arts Council for Wyoming County and Karrie Coleman & Kristen Mrowczynski from Clickety Sticks in Arcade. Special thanks to Sandy Pirdy, at Creekside Fabric, Quilts & Yarns for donating the yarns to make the cows.

Wyoming County is renowned for its farm-to-table culture; the County is the largest dairy producer in New York State; and our dairy farmers are recognized as leaders in the national agricultural community.

Whether in coffee, cereal, or smoothies, adding one more servings of milk to your family’s day can help ensure they get the nutrients they need to build strong bones and teeth. Trusted for decades, dairy farm families pride themselves on producing wholesome dairy foods that help our families grow up strong and healthy.

June Dairy Month started out as a way to distribute extra milk during the warm months of summer. The commemoration was established in 1937 by grocer organizations sponsoring “National Milk Month.” By 1939, June became the official “dairy month” and is still celebrated today.

The Chamber & Tourism’s mission is to serve the members and community; promote and grow area economic and tourism assets; and work collaboratively to create an environment that leads to the success and economic prosperity of Wyoming County. The key programs and services of the organization are educational seminars; leadership development; business assistance and guidance; cost-saving opportunities; advocacy; recognition, networking, exposure and promotional opportunities.
