They are considered the back up to the back up if all communications are lost.
About 20 members of the Genesee Radio Amateurs started setting up remotely at GCC today about 2:00p.m. to participate in Field Days 2021.
Considered the “Superbowl” for all Ham Radio operators across the country, the 24 hour once a year event is an open emergency preparedness exercise for the country says Nate Fernaays, President of the group.
“Particularly to work portably away from your home radio. You come out to the field and operate with batteries and generator power or solar power. Its an exercise to be prepared for any emergencies that come up across the country. If cellphone towers go down, weather events that take out certain infrastructure, a Ham Radio operator in a few moments notice can set up portably like we’re doing here today and be able to provide communications to emergency management, fire departments, and provide health and welfare checks for the Red Cross.”
Ham Radio operator Nate Fix explains his experiences and talks about Field Days.
The Genesee Radio Amateurs group was founded in 1967 and some members have been involved for 20-30 years.
The group meets every third Friday of the month and is open to anyone interested in Amateur Radio, you do not have to be a licensed Ham to be a member, you can also be an Associate member, the group welcomes all.
