GENESEE COUNTY/Batavia Police participate in Speed Awareness Week

Press release

The Batavia Police Department has been participating in the Speed Awareness Week Traffic Safety Mobilization which began on July 31, 2021, and runs through August 8, 2021.

SPEED CONTINUES TO BE A PREDOMINANT FACTOR IN TRAFFIC CRASHES IN NEW YORK STATE

• In 2020, over one-third (36%) of all traffic fatalities in New York were caused by speeding

• 365 people lost their lives and 2,069 suffered serious injuries in these preventable collisions

• The number of fatal crashes caused by unsafe speed increased during the summer months with the highest totals June – October

• More than one-third (34%) of the speed-related fatal and personal injury crashes occurred between noon and 6 pm

• NHTSA (U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) says 3 in 10 people speed. These drivers are also more likely to engage in other risky behaviors (no seat belt, drinking and driving, or using a cell phone while driving).

Speeding endangers not only the life of the speeder but all people on the road around them. Proactive, equitable, law enforcement is a primary weapon in curbing this deadly behavior. Increased traffic patrols are taking actions specifically targeting speed enforcement throughout the City of Batavia in an effort to curb speeding and protect life/property.
