GENESEE COUNTY/Long term substitute teacher formerly with Dansville Schools facing a new charge in Batavia

On August 4, 2021, Derek Hagen, 29, of Mt. Morris, was charged with use of child less than 17 in a sexual performance, a class C felony, in Batavia, after arraignment, bond was set at $20,000. Hagen made bond and was released.

PREVIOUS PRESS RELEASE/NYS Police July 27, 2021

The New York State Police report the arrest of Derek Hagen, age 29, of Mount Morris, NY for 2 counts of Possession of a Sexual Performance by a Child, a Class E Felony.  State Police release that Hagen is a long-term substitute teacher at the Dansville Central School District. 

Stemming from a Cyber-Tip originating from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Child and the Internet Crimes Against Children task force in Albany, NY, the State Police searched electronic items belonging to Hagen and his residence. 

Both images of child pornography and chats relating to child exploitation were discovered.  The State Police contacted the Dansville School District, and they are assisting with this investigation.  Mount Morris Police also assisted with the execution of the search of the residence.  At this time there is no indication that any students were involved. 

Hagen was released on an appearance ticket for the Village of Mount Morris Court on 08/11/21.  This investigation is on-going.

Statement of Paul Alioto Superintendent of Schools

The District has been advised that, on July 26, 2021, the New York State Police arrested Mr. Derek
Hagen and charged him with two counts of possession of a sexual performance by a child, a class E felony.
Mr. Hagen had been employed by the Dansville Central School District during the 2020-2021 school
year as a remedial teaching substitute and English for Speakers of Other Languages substitute, and as a teacher
for the summer school clinic, summer 2021. Mr. Hagen is no longer employed with the District.
We do not have any information to indicate that the criminal charges relate in any way to his service
with the District, nor that they involve any students or former students of the District.
We understand that the criminal investigation is in its early stages. As of now, the New York State
Police have taken the lead in investigating the matter. The District will work cooperatively with the State
Police and any other law enforcement agencies that may become involved in the case.
We are taking all steps necessary to ensure the welfare and safety of our students. As we understand it,
the charges, although serious in nature, are allegations at this point, and Mr. Hagen, like all citizens, is
presumed innocent of any criminal offense unless and until he is proven guilty in a court of law.
We have not been provided with all of the specifics of the criminal charges, and cannot comment further
