WYOMING COUNTY/8 fire companies battle grain bin fire in Sheldon

8 fire companies battled a grain bin fire at Trouw Nutrition at 3422 Dutch Hollow road in the Town of Sheldon on September 14, 2021 at 7:17am.

According to the Wyoming County Office of Emergency Services, the fire was contained to a 300 ton grain bin that contained 80 ton of gluten, which is used in dairy feed. The product spontaneously combusted due to high moisture content in the product inside the bin.

Fire crews used 85,000 gallons of water that was hauled to the scene by fire department tanker trucks, to break down and cool the product, which assisted in the flushing of the product out of the bin.

All of the grain in the bin was lost and the bin sustained some damage. Estimated loss is $60,000.

No one was injured in the fire and normal operations have resumed within the plant.

Fire crews from Strykersville, Arcade, Harris Corners, North Java, Sheldon, Wales Center, East Aurora and South Wales along with Wyoming County Emergency Services and Strykersville Squad 10 for 7 hours.
