As an exciting new way to serve the GOW (Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming Counties), Independent Living of the Genesee Region (ILGR), is offering “Food for Thought”, a cart that has a selection of donated books that readers can take for free! It’s available, weekdays, during business hours, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, outside their office at 319 West Main Street, Batavia, in the Crickler Executive Business Center – and inside the Lobby during bad weather.
Inspired by the “free libraries” that have been appearing in neighborhoods and business places, the agency put out the rolling cart, with initial stock acquired thanks to contributions by the Agency’s Advisory Council. While many people today are thoroughly connected to technology, depending on the Internet for information and social media and other on-line sources for entertainment; ILGR realized that before we had computers and smart phones, there was a time-honored way to access these things that is still available: BOOKS! We feel encouraging reading advances our core values of Education, Empowerment, and Equality.
For those without the time to read a book or who have visual or other “print disabilities” such as inability to hold printed material, our fellow Western New York Independent Living (WNYIL) agency, the Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service has volunteers reading newspapers, periodicals, best-selling fiction and non-fiction books, 24 hours per day. Broadcasts stream live on their website, www.nfradioreading.org – just click on the “LISTEN LIVE!” Button. After broadcast, selected material can be accessed through popular podcast sites like Amazon Music, Apple iTunes, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Sticher, Spreaker, iHeart, Audible and TuneIn.
