County leaders, construction partners along with representatives from the NYS Commission of Corrections were on hand at the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Genesee County Jail located at 3837 West Main street road, next to County Building #2, in the Town of Batavia on Thursday morning.
The 184-cell new jail will house men and women and is located on 20 acres. According to planners, it will be completed in March of 2024. The old jail, located at 14 West Main street in the City of Batavia, was built in 1902 and was expanded in 1984-85 and does not hold women. It is a medium security level County Jail and has a capacity of 87 inmates.
Total cost for the new jail project is $57.27 million and the process to get to today’s groundbreaking has taken about 5 years. The new jail was mandated by New York State.
