Ed Spence awarded the first Jill Spence Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Margaret Johnson of Pembroke (provided still photos) This is the first year of the award and is in memory of Ed’s sister who worked for Strong Memorial Hospital as a manager in outpatient pharmacy for over 20 years. Last month, Jill, 48, passed away after a sudden heart attack. The winner of the award is chosen based on similar characteristic that Jill possessed, very friendly, with a big heart, an easy-going person who loved to spoil her nieces, Jill was the favorite Aunt, a family person.

Scholarship Awards

Batavia Business & Professional Women’s Club Inc (BBPWC, Inc), 2022 Scholarship Committee, has awarded scholarships to ten Genesee County students.  Each student received a $750 check to help further their education.

The recipients were as follows:  Shawn Calmes of Alexander, Jenna Gilbert of Oakfield-Alabama, Alexandra Hackett of a home-school, Grace Hunn of Byron-Bergen, Imogene Plitt of Alexander, Kelsey
Schlagenhauf
of Oakfield-Alabama, Courtney Schum of Alexander, Matthew Smith of Batavia,
Kylie Tamara of Batavia, and Natalie Whitmore of Alexander.

Each student maintained an 85% average, complete a one-page BBPWC Inc. application with a letter of recommendation from a school staff member.  Each student submitted a personal essay discussing their achievements and future goals as well as an essay from a parent. The finalists were interviewed by the BBPWC Inc.’s Scholarship Committee in and were notified by one of the scholarship committee members.

Additionally, BBPWC Inc. presented eight $350 checks to our Service Award Recipients.  Checks were awarded to:  Alzheimer’s Association, Batavia Community Schools Equity Opportunity Family, Community Action of Orleans & Genesee County, Crossroads Roads, Genesee Cancer Assistance, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County, Project Stork, Inc., and The Bridge Addiction Recovery, Inc.

To be considered for the service award a letter with appropriate letterhead was sent to the BBPWC Inc requesting consideration.
