Independent Living of the Genesee Region (ILGR), a member of the Western New York Independent Living, Inc. Family of Agencies, welcomes Gina Schelemanow as a Housing Specialist.
At their (preferred pronoun) time of hire, Mx. Schelemanow had earned an Associate of Science degree in Liberal Arts and Science: General Studies from Genesee Community College in Batavia, class of 2016, and is well on their way to acquiring a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Empire State University by the end of 2022. While in school, they served in various leadership positions, and continue as the volunteer with the Little Free Pantry in Batavia, New York.
A Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA), their previous positions include Lead Peer Advocate of the Genesee Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse in Batavia; Genesee/Orleans Counselor Advocate at RESTORE Sexual Assault Services in Batavia; Linkage and Navigation Specialist at PathStone Corporation in Albion; and Community Development Specialist at Western New York Prevention Resource Center in Batavia.
In this new position, Gina will be assisting individuals to apply for, and navigate, the programs and services offered through Independent Living, including, but not limited to, coordinating housing evaluations and program options for persons experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness, including Rapid Rehousing. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic they also help with applications for the Emergency Solutions Grants – Corona Virus (ESG-CV) Program as funded by the CARES Act.
