The Genesee County Office for the Aging held their first open house on Wednesday afternoon, looking to connect with community after recently reopening their programs after being shut down due to the pandemic.
“We have been slowly starting to reopen our programs and we have done some refurbishing in the building,” says Diana Fox, Director of Genesee County Office for the Aging. “We wanted to have a splash to let people know that we are back and what we have to offer.”
The event brought quite a crowd to their location at 2 Bank street in the City of Batavia.
From 2-4p.m., local residents over the age of 60, caregivers and younger people with disabilities were able to come in and meet staff at Office for the Aging to learn more about programs and services that are offered.
“One of the things I discovered is there are a lot of new people coming into Genesee County that have no idea what we have to offer, so am very excited about everything and the number of people that came. This is a culmination of what the dedicated staff did. They each have an area of specialty, whether its insurance counseling, working with caregivers, delivering meals or case management, we provide information on all of these things.”
At 4:00p.m., RTS/Genesee provided a tour of Route 211 on one of their buses, showing riders how their service works and how to read a bus schedule. Older adults can ride for 1/2 price, .50 cents.
“A lot of people just don’t know that we are here, and they need to because the population is aging, and they need to know what is available for them.”
