WYOMING COUNTY/Hazmat team assists with fuel spill in Sheldon

The Wyoming County Hazmat Team assisted the Varysburg and Sheldon Fire Departments with a 125-gallon diesel fuel spill at 2035 Centerline road in the Town of Sheldon about 2:00a.m. Thursday morning.

According to the Wyoming County Office of Emergency Services, a tractor trailer’s drive shaft broke and damaged the fuel tank which caused diesel fuel to spill onto the roadway and on private property.

The truck was traveling east on Centerline road after following a detour from Rt. 20A, which was closed due to a downed power pole.

Varysburg and Sheldon Fire crews used absorbent materials to clean up the spill with assistance from the Wyoming County Hazmat Team. The NYS DEC was also on scene overseeing the cleanup operations by an environmental cleanup contractor.

Fire crews were on scene about 3 hours.
