The American Legion in LeRoy held a dedication ceremony at the old, abandoned St. Mark’s Episcopal Cemetery at St. Marks Street and Church Street in the Village of LeRoy on Friday morning.
According to Lynne Belluscio, a local LeRoy historian, three anonymous donors came forward and provided the funds to purchase a flagpole for the Old St. Mark’s cemetery. The American Legion will maintain the flag. There are two veterans at the Old St. Mark’s Cemetary currently. The last burial there was in 1893. Some people buried there were moved to Machpelah Cemetary as late as 1929 as family members did not want their loved ones in an abandoned cemetery Belluscio said.
There are 7 abandoned cemeteries in LeRoy. They are all maintained by the Town of LeRoy. The Town of LeRoy has assisted in installing the lighted flag poles at 6 out of the 7 abandoned cemeteries. The last abandoned cemetery without a flagpole will take a bit more work to get to in order to install a flagpole. It is well off the road and work crews are having trouble bringing their equipment onsite. Belluscio continues to work on clearing the way to install a flagpole there.
