WYOMING COUNTY/Three barns destroyed, heifers and calves lost in West Lake road fire

Extremely high winds caused a fire in a barn to spread and destroy three large barns in the Town of Castile on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Wyoming County Office of Emergency Services, sparks from a maple syrup arch accidentally blew onto a pile of straw inside a barn at Silver Meadows Farms at 4136 West Lake road about 12:07p.m.

Some heifers and calves were lost in the blaze. No one was injured.

A small shed and another large barn also caught fire, but the 21 fire companies on scene were able to save those structures. Three ladder trucks and 18 tankers operated at the fire scene along with multiple pumpers.

Fire crews from Silver Springs, Bliss, Castile, Gainesville, North Java, Perry, Perry Center, Pike, Sheldon, Strykersville, Varysburg, Warsaw, Wyoming, Geneseo, Cuylerville, Leicester, Mount Morris, Nunda, Pavilion, York, and Bethany were on scene for 6.5 hours.

Also assisting on scene, Wyoming County Emergency Services, Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department, Wyoming Correctional, Fredonia Gas, and NYSEG.
