On Thursday, February 23, 2023, Jared Wrazen, 30, of Java, Wyoming County, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 5 years of additional post release supervision.
This sentence stems from a domestic violence shooting that occurred on May 16, 2022.
On November 30, 2022, the defendant pleaded guilty to Assault in the first degree, a class B violent felony. His maximum sentence under this charge was 25 years. During the plea, the defendant admitted to being a second felony offender and now being convicted of his second violent felony offense. At the time of this offense, the defendant was on parole for a conviction to a prior Assault 1st charge. The plea agreement in this case called for a sentence of anywhere from 10 years to 20 years together with 5 years of Post Release Supervision. At sentencing, the Hon. Michael M. Mohun sentenced the defendant to 20 years in prison.
The defendant’s mother, Carolyn Wrazen, was also charged separately for possessing a firearm that was not on her pistol permit license. Ms. Wrazen knew that her son was a convicted felon who was on parole and living in her residence. She knew that he couldn’t have any access to guns. She failed to keep those guns away from him or to report the matter to his parole officer. It was later learned that she possessed a firearm that was not on her pistol permit and therefore she later was charged with that crime. On February 1, 2023 she entered a plea to a B misdemeanor and was sentenced to a 1 year conditional discharge. Her pistol permit has been suspended, the illegal gun seized and all other guns that she possessed under the license. The final status of her permit at this time is unknown.
“The defendant in this case has a long history of violent domestic violence along with the abuse of drugs and/or alcohol. In this case he destroyed yet another family by traumatizing the 29 year old victim, her 4 year old son as well as causing the death of her unborn child. The victim in this case was courageous in the face of death as the defendant threatened to kill her and her unborn child. She was able to call 911 and have the events recorded as the defendant continued to threaten and ultimately shoot the victim. It is recordings like this that truly highlight how traumatic and violent domestic violence can be. If it were not for quick thinking of the victim, the excellent and quick response of Wyoming County Deputy Sheriff Chance Sampson, Arcade Police Officer Katherine Turnbull and members of Strykersville EMS and Mercy Flight the outcome could have been even worse,” said Wyoming County District Attorney Donald O’Geen.
The case was investigated by the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Wyoming County District Attorney Donald O’Geen. The defendant was represented by Jeffrey Lichtman and David Gelfand of New York City.
