WYOMING COUNTY/Barn is a total loss after late afternoon fire, one person treated for smoke inhalation

Seven fire companies responded to a barn fire at 3325 Bartz Road in the Town of Sheldon late Monday afternoon.

According to Wyoming County Office of Emergency Services, a 60’x130′ single story pole barn which contained a repair shop and a large amount of hay, caught fire about 4:00p.m.

The barn is owned by Fontaine Homestead LLC. The barn is a total loss. Damages are estimated at $500,000. Multiple pieces of farm equipment inside the barn were also destroyed in the blaze.

One family member was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire crews from Sheldon, Strykersville, N. Java, Arcade, Bliss, Harris Corners and Varysburg were on scene for about six hours.

Also assisting on scene, Wyoming County Emergency Services, Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department and Wyoming Correctional Facility.
