WYOMING COUNTY/Three Correctional Officers injured in incident at Wyoming Correctional Facility

Press release

Attica, NY – Two officers were transported to local hospitals after they were injured during an
incident with an inmate which began when he kicked one officer in both knees and legs,
causing the officer to fall to the ground and hit his head against the wall at the medium security
correctional facility last week.
On Thursday, February 1, an officer was conducting security rounds in one of the facility
dorms. He found an inmate in the bathroom, apparently intoxicated on an unknown
substance. With the assistance of a second officer, the inmate was handcuffed and escorted
from the bathroom into the vestibule of the dorm and additional assistance was called. Prior
to being frisked for contraband, the inmate kicked backwards, striking one officer in both knees
and legs, causing him to fall and strike his head against the wall. During the altercation, the
inmate fell directly on top of the officer. At that point, the inmate became unresponsive. The
inmate was administered one dose of Narcan by staff, which was effective. When the inmate
became alert and conscious, he was brought to his feet and placed on stretcher and
transported to the infirmary. During the transport, while securing the inmate, one officer
slipped on the surface injuring his knee.
The inmate was successfully transported to the infirmary and later brought to a local hospital
for evaluation where medical staff determined he was high on an intoxicant.

The officer who was initially assaulted was transported to Erie County Medical Center and
treated for swollen forehead, knee swelling, forearm abrasions and exposure to the
intoxicant. He did not return to duty after being released from the medical center.
The officer who injured his knee during the transport was treated at Wyoming County
Community Hospital. He did not return to duty.
A third officer sustained a shoulder injury loading the stretcher and inmate into the transport
ambulance. He was treated at the facility and remained on duty.

“On January 29th, DOCCS issued a memo that all facilities would begin a “Season for Non Violence”, a 64-day event in which inmates would be encouraged to practice non-violence,
taught the benefits of non-violence and provided journals to write down their thoughts. The
memo also references the record year of inmate on staff and inmate on inmate violence in 2023. Not even a week ago we just reported assaulted Officers at Wyoming, clearly the inmates
could care less about the memo, or if an Officer gets seriously hurt. This is an absolute slap in
the face to the hard working men and women who are subjected to daily attacks at the hands
of violent inmates. The progressive wing of the State Legislature near the city that continue to
advocate for inmates and their rights while ignoring the historic levels of violence that exist,
have made a complete mess of the criminal justice system in the State of New York and we are
all paying for it, inside and outside of the walls and fences.”-stated Kenny Gold, NYSCOPBA
Western Region Vice President
